Moses isn’t just a pen name…
Striving to give a reasoned defense for biblical faith, it can sometimes be easy to get lost in the arguments themselves and forget why we must all be prepared to give good reasons (1Peter 3:15) for the hope Jesus is and gives.
For the last couple of months I’ve been searching to see if there is evidence which points to Moses being the one who wrote the Torah (the first five books of the Old Testament) in response to a question I had e-mailed to me. I am so in over my head, but without a doubt the answer is absolutely yes! And there is more than I can keep up with. However, I also have to ask myself why this is so important, I mean, is this even a battle worth fighting?
We read in John’s gospel of one of many attempts to trap Jesus by the Pharisees. On this occasion Jesus confronts them with the reality of their misunderstanding and disobedience of their own scriptures. At this time the only scriptures they had were those of the Old Testament. Summing up his argument into a couple of phrases, Jesus told them “For if you had believed Moses, you would have believed Me, for he wrote of Me. But if you do not believe his writings, how shall you believe My Words?” (John 5:46-47). That explains clearly from the mouth of my Savior why it is so important to answer this question. The real question behind the question is this, “can we trust Jesus?” There are lots of people today who don’t trust Moses wrote, some of them are good Christian people who have been deceived. What we all must realize is that the bible has the First and final word on all things. Defending the bible then is not about arguing for my faith. Apologetics is about knowing my Savior, it’s about trusting my Savior, and it’s about loving my Savior with my mind as well as my heart soul and strength (Mk 12:30). The end result is helping others to know Him, also whenever they believe they have good reasons not to.
I am so thankful for God’s word. I pray you are as blessed as I am when you read it.
Grace and peace,
Arron
