Treasures

Matthew 6:19,20 NLT
"Do not store up treasures on earth where moth and rust destroy, and thieves break in and steal. Store your treasures in heaven, where moths and rust do not destroy, and where thieves cannot break in and steal. Wherever your treasure is, there your heart will also be."

What is your prized possession? I'd have to say mines my car.

Now think about what you would say if someone asked you to give it away. I'm pretty sure I'd tell the they were nuts.

Okay, now think about what you'd say if God asked you to give it away. Would you? The obvious answer is yes, but is it the truth, or just what you know is the right thing to do. Personally I think I'd have a little more trouble handing over my car keys than I'd like to admit.

But God calls us to be unconcerned with our worldly possessions. Take Matthew 6:20, in this verse it states that where your treasures are, there your heart will also be. So if your treasure is your car, or computer, or horse, than your heart will also be concerned with these things. Now these are not bad things to have, as long as they don't consume you or your time. Meaning if God asked you to give your computer to the kid down the street and you refused, what does this imply? That your computer is more important to you than being obedient to God?

By obeying God when He asks, you are not getting ripped off. Mark 10:29,30 states that anyone who gives up riches for Christ will be repaid one hundred times as much. This does not necessarily mean that if you give your horse away when God asks that the next week you will receive 100 horses. It simply means that if you are faithful to God you will be blessed for your faith. However being faithful to God also comes with a price. Persecution. The world hates God, and because of this hates us as Christians. Jesus reminds us of this at the end of Mark 10:30 to ensure we wont follow Him only for the physical rewards.

So what will you do if God asks you to give up something? I hope, for one, that if it comes down to it, I value God more than my car.
