Helping others

A friend of mine has a fridge magnet which always seems to catch my eye as I walk through his kitchen. “World Vision is a Christian non-profit humanitarian organization seeking to do good in a world of hurt through acts of compassion”. I’m going from memory here, but it’s something to that effect. I always have this nagging question go through my mind, why is it a “Christian” humanitarian organization? To me that just seems to be repeating itself a little bit.

In order to understand why, we all have to ask “why help others in need”? What is so special about humans that we should care for each other? As a matter of fact, why should we care about the environment? Or the animals? What makes it all so special that we need to take care of it all anyway? It never stops amazing me when I here people who blatantly hate God, or at least the God of the bible, and at the same time keep pushing for humanitarian goals, or conservation goals. Here is why. Only in the book of genesis, chapters 1 and 2, do we have a reason to help and be good to the environment. There is simply no other belief system in the world which has the type of foundation which can hold those philosophies up so they don’t come crashing down. To those who believe in some form of evolution, people are nothing more than a chemical accident; people don’t have any value. Those who believe in “mother nature” really don’t have any reason to help after the Tsunami hit last year; in that example the animals sensed something was wrong and went to safer ground ahead of time, they did better than the humans as mother nature desired. God tells us we were created in His image (Gen 1:27). The earth is His and all it’s fullness (Ps 89:11). He created it all with a purpose in mind. As such, He commands us to take care of what He gave us, and to love our neighbors as ourselves. To a Christian, humanitarian efforts make sense! To anyone else, they are either senseless or self contradictory.

Now do you understand why a Christian humanitarian is saying the same thing twice? Just a little food for thought.
