Proverbs 8:36- “…all those that hate Me love death.”
When the holidays come up, I basically never find myself studying bible passages related to the holiday we’re celebrating. It’s not intentional; I’m just not one to follow the holidays in my devotional life. I’m guessing that is why Remembrance Day on Saturday must have stood out to me. We are all part of a generation which takes for granted the price the world paid some 60 years ago. My grandparents survived the war because it was Canada, many I believe who were from here in Manitoba, who liberated Holland. My mom’s side of the family were all born there. I exist today partly because of that. As I sat thinking about it, thinking about the newspapers reminding us to be thankful for the freedom we have, I found my self thankful for another reason. Please bear with me…
The best argument ever reasoned for the existence of God is called the moral argument. Without getting into the long winded explanation, let’s remember what happened in world war two. A nation, led by people who didn’t believe God existed, understood that left the door open for them to make whatever rules they wanted. If God doesn’t exist, than man has the last word on everything which needs to be named good or evil. They also believed that we evolved from monkeys. Believing this lie (there is no proof for evolution at all!), the Nazi leaders thought they would help evolution along by killing all those who hadn’t evolved as strong as themselves. Because they made themselves the judges of what is good and evil, they had the legal rights to do so, but just because something is legal, it doesn’t mean it is good. The rest of the story is actual history now. The places where the most evil acts occurred in the war are still around today so Europe will never forget. I visited Holland, and have seen some of their monuments with my own eyes. Only when you see them with your own eyes can you believe the size of the war cemeteries.
I’m trying to be gentle here; I’m not trying to shock anyone. Just because some believe evolution, or deny God exists, doesn’t make them murderers, but the fact is more people have been killed in the last 100 years because of the idea there is no God (atheism, and secular humanism), than in all the known religious wars of the last 2000 years!
So why am I thankful? First, because God is in complete control, He is holy. His love is Holy love, His mercy is perfect mercy, and His justice is perfect justice.
Secondly, when people mock my Christian values and try to develop all kinds of theories of how to run the world while mocking God’s laws, God has left us in the war the greatest evidence man could ever have that to “love the Lord your God with all your heart, mind, soul, and strength”, and to “love your neighbor as yourself” aren’t such a bad idea after all (Mk 12:29-30).
